🌱 Under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor of the Université d’Abomey-Calavi (Prof. Felicien AVLESSI), the Genetics, Biotechnology and Seed Science Unit (GBioS) of the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences was honoured to welcome the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research (Prof. Eléonore YAYI LADEKAN), the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (Dr. Gaston DOSSOUHOUI), the Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises and Employment Promotion (M. Modeste KEREKOU), the Ambassador of the Republic of France in Benin (M. Marc VIZY), the President of the Université de Lorraine (Prof. Helene Boulanger) and the Director of the L’Institut Agro Montpellier (Prof. Carole Sinfort).
A guided tour was facilitated by Prof. Enoch Gbenato Achigan-Dako, Dr. Charlotte Adje and Dr. Dedeou A. Tchokponhoue to the tissue culture platform, the molecular biology platform as well as the Genebank (CalaviGen) to showcase the expertise of the Unit and the facilities that are available for germplasm conservation and utilisation, molecular diagnoses and diversity analysis, seedling micropropagation, cytogenetics and seed testing.
This visit was organised in the framework of the inauguration of the entrepreneurship centre of the BIOVALOR project funded by the AFD – Agence Française de Développement (AFD) through the new higher education partnership in Africa (PEA) of the ANR (Agence nationale de la recherche).
GBioS is very pleased to host the equipment of the entrepreneurship centre, as well as the University of Abomey-Calavi’s gene bank (CalaviGen) funded by the Crop Trust and the Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative (TAVI) of the World Vegetable Center. With these additional resources, efforts are consolidated to improve end-users’ livelihoods.
