Congratulations to Dr. Christel Ferréol Azon on successfully defending his PhD thesis entitled “Developing pathways for higher yielding cultivars of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) adapted to agroecological zones of Benin” at the University of Abomey-Calavi, within the Genetics, Biotechnology, and Seed Science Unit (GBioS). This outstanding achievement marks another important milestone in his academic journey and in agricultural research in Benin.
The main goal of Dr. Azon’s research was to boost sesame production in Benin by developing high-yielding cultivars adapted to the country’s diverse agroecological zones.
To achieve this, he began with a comprehensive literature review titled “An overview of sesame production: avenues for the promotion of an important oilseed crop in Benin and West Africa.” This review provided insights into the current state of sesame production and highlighted opportunities for growth and improvement.
Socio-demographic factors and ethnobotanical knowledge related to sesame management practices were analyzed through a survey involving 370 farmers across various agroecological zones. The data collected included socio-demographic characteristics, cropping practices, and ethnobotanical uses of sesame.
The findings shed light on how socio-economic factors and traditional practices influence sesame cultivation and highlighted the need for improved cultivars to increase yields and profitability.
This research provides valuable perspectives on sesame breeding and production strategies in Benin. By identifying the constraints and opportunities in sesame farming, Dr. Azon’s work sets the stage for developing high-yielding, climate-adapted sesame varieties that can improve food security and support local economies.
Congratulations once again to Dr. Christel Ferréol Azon for his remarkable contribution to agricultural research and the future of sesame production in Benin!
