This represents one of the core areas of our research at GBioS focusing on the development of higher-yielding varieties adapted to specific climates and soils for both major and opportunity crops. We exploit the biological mechanisms for plant growth and development to improve crops production. We use classical and modern breeding tools to resolve domestication bottlenecks, reduce pest and disease harms on target crops for cultivars development and economic growth of West African countries.. Genomic breeding from the scratch comes with obvious challenges and passion when the basic knowledge on crop description, floral biology and plant cytology is lacking particularly for orphan crops also referred to as opportunity crops. That is why we created a conducive environment for capacity building and acceleration to targets. The creation of novel crops driven from farmers’ local resources has ignited the development of more robust seed systems for farmers.
