Title: Vegetable seed kits for food security in Madagascar and Benin (Seed kits)
Abstract: Climate change in combination with increasing food prices puts up a challenge to achieve zero hunger in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and to ensure that poor households can access healthy diets. The purpose of this project is to improve nutrition of vulnerable households in Benin through enhanced access to vegetable seed by delivering seed kits, setting up home and school gardens, and through training in vegetable production and preparation, and seed saving. In Benin, roughly four in ten children are chronically malnourished. The project will provide the most vulnerable populations with the means to produce a balanced supply of protein and micronutrients. The outputs include i) vegetable seed kits distributed to 1,990 Beninese households; ii) vegetable seed kit distribution and training for school garden establishment in 10 primary schools in Benin; iii) training-of 100 trainers organized in both countries on vegetable consumption and production in Benin and Madagascar; and iv) a baseline study carried for future impact assessment.
