INTRODUCTION
Cleome ( Gynandropsis gynandra (L.) Briq., syn. Cleome gynandra L.) is an annual plant of the
Cleomaceae family found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The plant is distinguished by its
whitish flowers and aroma. Mainly used in Africa and Southeast Asia, it constitutes an important
subsistence resource for local communities. In Benin, its production, which was carried out exclusively in
the departments of Mono and Couffo in home gardens and aimed at self-consumption, has been expanding for
several years to large market gardening sites (e.g. VIMAS). It is a leafy vegetable with a very wide diversity
of nutrients that are very beneficial for human growth and health. It is locally called “Akaya” in Fon, “Sabo” in Adja, “Efô Oko” in Yoruba/Nago, “Somboe/Sobui” in Ewe.
